Applied Health Econometrics

PHSC5383  Given the extensive use of secondary data in health economics, it has become increasingly important to understand the econometric techniques available to applied researchers. The course emphasizes application of various econometric techniques using Stata, a complete, integrated statistical software that provides researchers data analysis, data management, and graphics. The course starts by providing students with basic training in econometrics theory, followed by discussion of various econometric techniques that are commonly used in health economics. Students will be given assignments to implement these techniques in Stata and write an original research paper applying one of the methods covered in class to health care data.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the students are expected to have a good foundation for basic econometric theory and be able to implement various econometric models commonly applied to health care data in Stata. At the end of the class, students are expected to independently develop an applied research paper using one of the techniques learned in class.
